I recorded a LIVE Youtube Video on this very subject and broke down some basics on understanding how to increase the range of motion in your knee without pain.
By increasing the comfortable range of motion you break down scar tissue NOT the other way around
We first must make some distinctions regarding the difference between the Anatomical Range of Motion and the Comfortable Range of Motion.
- The Anatomical Range of Motion – is the knee joints ability to fully extend and fully bend.
- The Comfortable Range of Motion – is contained within the Anatomical Range of Motion.
The Comfortable Range of Motion is the range of motion in the knee joint you’re able to extend and bend before you feel pain and/or have to force the knee joint to go further.
These are drastically different Ranges of Motion and understanding the difference is the entire reason why so many people who develop scar tissue in their knee continue in a cycle of pain.
The Conventional Approach to Increasing Knee Range of Motion
The conventional medical approach to increasing the range of motion in the knee joint revolves around strengthening the legs and pushing through the pain to break down scar tissue hopefully increasing the range of motion in the knee joint.
The main problem with this approach is it hurts like hell, causes you to limp for days afterward and most of the time the knee reverts back to the range of motion it had before the knee was forced otherwise.
Quite frequently this approach will leave you feeling like “4 steps forward and 3 steps back” doing a lot of work and really going nowhere.
No fun or encouraging especially when the experience of pain in the knee joint gets “older and older” every time it gets pushed.
The Knee Pain Guru Approach to Increasing Knee Range of Motion
Now The Knee Pain Guru Approach is quite different to increase the range of motion in the knee joint to break down scar tissue.
First, we begin creating focused and intentional comfort in the knee joint which immediately begins to teach your knee to start relaxing.
Now, this is NOT just propping your knee up on pillows while you’re watching television when I’m talking about comfort.
I’m talking about a level of awareness in the knee joint to pin point where the knee hurts and using a specific range of motion in the intrinsic movement of the joint to get the pressure off the nerves to feel relief and create comfort in the knee joint.
I know this sounds complicate as all get out, but it’s actually pretty simple and something you can feel as easily as when you pull a splinter from your finger.
When the knee is in this position of focused and intentional comfort the joint relaxes and immediately begins to increase the comfortable range of motion.
Although the increased comfortable range of motion may be small at first, with repeated practice your knee begins to understand/feel what comfort is again and starts to tolerate the level of pain you used to have in the knee less and less.
Now the natural movement of the knee joint can begin to break down the scar tissue on its own much easier.
The entire goal of this approach is to help you:
– Escape your hopelessness by working specifically with your comfortable knee range of motion so you can discover your “Position of Comfort.”
– Eliminate the Confusion Pain Creates and Reclaim your freedom and live the active, healthy lifestyle you’ve been yearning for by using “Pain-Pattern Interrupt” stretching techniques which take the pressure of the nerves in the knee and immediately provide relief.
– Stop the cycle of painful physical therapy by understanding how to relieve the intense pressure on each and every one of the THOUSANDS of pain receptors, in your knee, which will flood your knee, leg, and body with relief.
