That’s how it was for me.
It began in 1998. I was the owner of a successful computer company, training and competing in Judo 4 to 5 times per week. I had the perfect life, the girlfriend, the house, the car, plenty of money…life was perfect.
It was the Christmas holidays, and a buddy invites me to go skiing. Great. Let’s go. He was a chiropractor. I am riding up the chair, first run down, I hit a patch of ice and kind of did the splits. Then my feet got together and I face plant. I feel my knee pop. I was in gut wrenching pain.
The rescue crew takes me down the mountain in one of those ski sleds…
At the lodge my buddy, the chiropractor, examines my knee and pops it back into place. So, I thought, it’s okay. I’ll just rest and take care of it and it will be okay.
I stayed away from judo for a bit, and rested my knee, sorta. I was in the middle of remodeling my basement, so I had a lot going on. And my knee would randomly “lock up”. And I would react… “hmmm… what just happened?”
But I kept thinking it will heal up, so I did the ostrich thing. I ignored it. Buried my head in the sand and pretended it was going to get better.
I headed back to Judo with some caution. It was March, and I was grappling with a buddy. So, we are wrestling on the ground and he did this thing where he wrapped his legs around my legs and he extended his legs and I my knee pops again.
It was like the power plant had set a jolt of electricity through every fiber of my body. My buddy jumped up, like he had gotten a taste of that shock wave himself… ‘are you okay?’
That was the second time. Now I was terrified to go back to Judo. And equally terrified to go to a doctor.
So… I just decided to do other things. I rode my bike mostly.
Another buddy starts a volleyball league and asks me to join. Yeah, I can do that I thought.
It’s late March, and our first game. The serve is within inches of the net. I jump for the ball and when I my feet hit the ground. My knee locks, pops, and I fall to the court like a wounded soldier, screaming in agony.
Now my knee is swollen and on fire, like I was stung by a hive full of hornets.
I finally start getting help with alternative therapies. I start wearing one of those Frankenstein knee braces, the kind that make you walk around stiff legged dragging your knee along with you.
I was determined that this thing was going to get better.
In other words, I was not going to the doctor for a diagnosis. I am a fit guy. I can work through this.

My knee is in the brace, and I am being careful, so I take my usual position at shortstop. Batter hits a ground ball directly to me. I fielded the ball; I stepped with my left leg and followed through perfectly. Beautiful play, except…
I am now on the ground, screaming. I’m holding my knee. And my screams are like those deep, guttural screams like I’m dying… just holding on with my last breath.
This one was the knife to my heart.
I headed to the Emergency Room… and the diagnosis.
ACL torn. Meniscus torn. Surgery required.
I had the surgery to repair the ligament and torn meniscus, I will spare you the details here. But, after 3 months of physical therapy and medication… I was still in pain. Unacceptable, debilitating pain.

My knee pain began from no where, one fine morning. I was all of 22, studying hard for my engineering final semester exams.
I was under a lot of stress (all in the mind though), and what started out as a mild pain, grew to haunt my very existence. Yes, now when I look back, all of the stress was caused due to my inefficient ways of dealing with it. Little did I know back then , how much mismanaged stress could do. I went through an array of doctors, who didn’t really feel warm. All of them prescribing one pill or the other. Some of them even attributed it to stress, but no one really drove the point home.
It began in april ’06. It would be there, from the minute I awoke. Sitting idle was a torment. Can you imagine? Sitting down was tormenting! Gradually it dawned on me that “my health” was in my hands. A doctor later dismissed my case as restless leg syndrome.
Prior to taking and working on your advice I could not walk a kilometer without severe pain, which in the end stopped me walking any further. Hi Bill, I haven’t written to you because I’m so busy on the pickleball courts that I hardly have time to look at my computer. That’s the down side of the Knee Pain Guru program! When I joined your program in October, I could hardly walk. I was in so much pain with my knee. I found your site on the internet and even though I’ve been training myself to be skeptical of things, I signed up. The first day I read your book, my knee began to heal. That exercise of sitting on a table/stool/bed and swinging my legs in all directions made such a huge difference in my knees. Something really helped with that. I have been using your book and videos daily. There has been a tremendous amount of improvement in my R knee. I have gone from severe pain , with a slight limp , to walking properly , and no pain.
